Have you ever heard of an exoskeleton? It’s basically a heavy duty frame which wraps around your body and makes tasks like lifting and carrying objects easier. This is the Fortis exoskeleton, an ergonomic metallic frame designed to allow users to carry heavy tools and operate them at a height without putting strain on their back or shoulders. The third generation Fortis model was showcased at the 2017 SXSW festival in Austin, Texas.
Developed by Exoskeleton Technologies, a division of defense company Lockheed Martin, the Fortis suit is projected to last between five to ten years of heavy operation. The first generation was launched in 2014 and exoskeleton has since been adopted by many manufacturing and automobile companies, as well as the US Navy.
